Fire is wet, Dragon's met

May your candle burn bright until you reach the next shore.

Lampadomancy (a form of pagan divination using a candles/lamps) comes to us imperfectly from pre-Christian Saxon times (although, like the names of the days of the week, it seems to have survived in the English kingdoms despite Augustine and Gregory).

In mid-Summer, people would send candles in tiny boats floating across farm ponds in the hope that the candle would arrive at the opposite side (fire is wet). If the flame arrived safe, you could be assured of health in the coming year (dragon's met).
